Assad: Syria reserves right to respond to Israel attack
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report October 6, 2007
In an interview with the BBC's Arabic program, Syrian president Bashar Assad said military response was always an option. This need not be missile for missile, or bomb for bomb. There are other ways, he said, in reference to what he called an Israeli attack on a deserted military installation. The attack, he said, proved Israel's profound rejection of the peace process. Syria will not attend the international peace summit at Annapolis unless the restoration of Golan to Syria is discussed.

debkafile reports: Close Assad aide reiterates that Syria will respond to Israeli attack at a time and place of its choosing
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report September 23, 2007
Minister of Expatriates, Butheina Shabaan, who is generally regarded as President Bashar Assad's personal mouthpiece, made this statement Tuesday, Sept 18. It was a replay of the one first issued by a junior official on Sept. 6, together with the initial accusation that Israeli warplanes had invaded Syrian air space.
debkafile's American and Israeli sources interpret Shabaan's statement's coming now as important because it appears to indicate that the Syrian president, after due consideration, has come down on the side of a military response some time soon.

North Korea denies secretly helping Syria develop a nuclear weapons facility, postpones six-party talks
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report September 20, 2007
These charges, which followed the alleged Israeli air incursion over Syria, plus reports that Syria was holding technology or materials relating to North Korea's nuclear program were dismissed by the foreign ministry in Pyongyang as groundless and misleading.
No reason was offered for the postponement of the six-party talks due to begin Wednesday, Sept. 19, on the dismantling of North Korea's nuclear program.
Sunday, US defense secretary Robert Gates said the US is keeping a close eye on Syria and North Korea. Cooperation with Syria on a nuclear facility would be "a real problem," he said.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report September 18, 2007

The Syrian armed forces are on full alert.
debkafile's sources report that the silent war of nerves, started after the first Syrian allegation that Israeli bombers had violated of its airspace Thursday, continues.

debkafile Exclusive: Assad is willing to talk to Olmert without involving Washington - but not to abandon absolute commitment to Tehran
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 31, 2007
This double message was brought to Jerusalem last week by Edward P. Djerejian from unpublicized meetings he held in Damascus with president Bashar Assad and Syrian military and intelligence chiefs. This former US ambassador to Israel and Syria reported that Assad is willing to drop his prior conditions for talks with Israel regarding parallel dialogue with Washington and US participation in the peace process. But the Syrian ruler is also utterly committed to the diplomatic and military policies of his senior partner, Tehran.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 28, 2007
The redeployment of commando units close to Israeli lines on the slopes of Mt Hermon has raised temperatures in Israel. Military sources comment that these Syrian units, especially trained for cross-border raids, are now in position to make a grab for Israeli territory or a surprise attack on the Israeli army position at the meeting point of the Israel, Syria and Lebanese borders.
The IDF like Syria is building fortifications on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights.

DEBKA-Net-Weekly: Iran plots with Syrian military to overthrow Bashar Assad
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 19, 2007
On Aug. 3, DEBKA-Net-Weekly reported that Syrian president Bashar Assad is in danger from, of all countries, his closest ally, Iran. The Islamic rulers in Tehran have begun to perceive him as an unreliable element in the radical Crescent of Influence they are striving to build across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Gaza, mistrustful of his repeated bids to mend his fences with Washington and offers of peace talks with Israel.
For an account of the plot and its ramifications, read DEBKA-Net-Weekly article below.

Syria has no intention of waging war against Israel to regain the occupied Golan Heights, says Syrian VP Farouq al-Shara
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 19, 2007
"Israel knows we don't want war. We should always be ready to respond to Israeli aggression, but Syria will not start a war," Shara said Tuesday.
"People will not accept anything less than Israeli withdrawal from the whole of the occupied Golan Heights, he added. "Any Syrian preparations were defensive, while Israel wants any excuse to launch a war."
debkafile: In the Syrian vice president's vocabulary, terror is a legitimate form of "defense" or "resistance" rather than "starting a war", while any counter-action against Palestinian terror is perceived as "Israeli aggression".

Iran Plots Syrian President's Ouster
Buoyed up by the triumphs of Hizballah's war offensive against Israel in 2006 and Hamas' takeover of Gaza, the clerical rulers of Tehran have invested so heavily in their expanding power structure across the region that a fiasco could push their regime and military prop, the fierce Revolutionary Guards, into a perilous slide at home. To play it safe, DEBKA-Net-Weekly's Iran sources reveal they have hatched a plan to replace the vacillating figure in Damascus with a puppet at their beck and call, modeled on Hizballah's Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.
Thus far, Assad has not strayed too far from the guidelines he and his Iranian allies laid down together, but Tehran can never be sure when he might swerve from the straight and narrow to make his peace with the Americans. The can only guarantee Syria stays in their pockets by installing a pro-Iran loyalist in the presidential palace in Damascus.

debkafile's military sources report that the latest intelligence update on Syria's intentions indicated that Syria's political and military leaders had rescheduled the start of hostilities against Israel on the Golan for the second two weeks of November, 2007, postponing their original planning by more than two months.

Bashar Assad calls for indirect peace talks with Israel - but only after a guarantee for the Golan's restoration
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 21, 2007
debkafile's sources: Assad was in fact asking Israel to send officials to "proximity talks," probably in Ankara, with Turkey playing the role of go-between. He made the offer at the inauguration of his second term as president of Syria Tuesday, July 17. The Israeli prime minister has repeatedly offered to hold direct peace talks with the Syrian ruler anywhere without prior conditions. Assad called up the case of his predecessor Yitzhak Rabin who gave up land for peace.

UN envoy Michael Williams reports his "impression" that peace deal progress with Israel would change Damascus' relations with Iran, Hizballah and Hamas
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 14, 2007
This impression was gained from "talks with Syrian leaders in recent months." debkafile notes: Williams admits he was not conveying a signal - only his impression. There is no way Syria would abandon its ties with Iran, Hizballah and pro-Damascus radical Palestinian groups, on whom it depends to carry through its plans against the Lebanese government.

Syrian troops enter Lebanon, fortify positions to depth of three kilometres
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 9, 2007
Lebanese security sources report the intruding force backed by bulldozers has taken up position near Yanta in east Lebanon's Beqaa Valley and is digging hundreds of trenches and bunkers in more than one area along the Lebanese border. This explains why Syria Wednesday reopened the Joussia-Qaa border post. Damascus-backed Palestinian radicals have been fighting Lebanese troops for close to two months in the still unresolved battle of Nahr al-Bared near Tripoli.

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 5, 2007
On July 4, Radio Damascus' political commentator said the large-scale Israeli military exercise which ended that night on Golan means Israel is about to go to war against Syria. However, a week before the Israeli maneuver, DEBKA-Net-Weekly's military sources discovered that Syria had on June 26 quietly opened the Damascus-Golan road to Quneitra to civilian traffic for the first time in 40 years.

Syria Winds up Planning for Campaign of Terror on Golan
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 5, 2007
On June 26, Syria opened the Damascus-Golan road to Quneitra to civilian traffic for the first time since the Six-Day War of 1967. No announcement was made. The dozens of military roadblocks studding the 60 km high road connecting the capital with the Syrian part of Golan for 40 years were removed, except for two - one at the entrance to Qunetra from the Syrian end and one at the town's exit to Israeli Golan. DEBKA-Net-Weekly's military sources report that this measure went mostly unnoticed, although it made Israeli military intelligence sit up.
DEBKA-Net-Weekly's intelligence sources disclose that a year ago, in June 2006, Syrian military intelligence recruited several hundred Golan refugees for a new framework called the Front for the Liberation of the Golan Heights. They were trained for terror operations, blowing up roads and bridges, attacks on military camps and convoys and hostage-taking.

Syrian and Iranian Generals in Intensive War Consultations
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 9, 2007
debkafile's intelligence and Middle East sources take a look at the actions behind the words issuing from Damascus officials affirming Syria's willingness to go into peace talks with Israel.
During most of last week, two high-ranking Iranian delegations spent time in Damascus. One was composed of generals who held talks with Syrian leaders on coordinated preparations for a Middle East war in the coming months.
The regime heads in Tehran are basing their common front with Damascus on intelligence reports whereby the US and Israel have drawn up plans for coordinated military action against Iran, Syria and Hizballah in the summer.
According to this hypothesis, Iranian leaders foresee the next UN Security Council in New York at the end of June or early July ending with an American announcement that the sanctions against Tehran are inadequate because Russia and China has toned them down. Therefore, the military option is the only one left on the table.
