DEBKAfile DEBKA Weekly January 23, 2016

The latest DEBKA Weekly out Friday reveals the last-minute nuclear concessions Iran, with sanctions relief in its pocket, squeezed from Washington for a prisoner swap on Jan. 16. Tehran then short-changed the US – only three Americans were on the plane to Switzerland instead of the promised four. And that day, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards snatched three more Americans to top up its store of hostage chips.

A long way to go for Iranian approval of nuclear accord
The nuclear chess game begins: Iran plays for sanctions relief before compliance with deal
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis September 4, 2015

The crowing over Barack Obama’s success in gaining congressional support for his Iranian nuclear deal against Binyamin Netanyahu’s defeat is premature. The Vienna nuclear deal of June 14 was the first round of the game. More are still to come, before either can be said to have won or lost. The biggest hurdle is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s silence on where he stands, except for insisting on immediate sanctions relief. Netanyahu and AIPAC are fully fired up to take their campaign against a nuclear-armed Iran to the next stage: the fight over sanctions.

DEBKAfile Special Report August 7, 2015

The Obama administration’s battle for congressional endorsement of the nuclear deal signed last month with Iran received a double reverse Friday, Aug. 7, when two influential Democrats, New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is expected to take over as Senate Democratic leader in 2017, and New York Rep. Eliot Engel, the ranking Democrat of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced they would vote against the accord. They cited weaknesses of the inspection regime. Secretary of State John Kerry said he "profoundly disagrees" with their reasoning. But fellow Democratic lawmakers were impressed.

News flash for Obama: With or without a nuclear deal, Hizballah’s Iranian missiles threaten Tel Aviv
DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis August 5, 2015

President Barack Obama missed the point by warning the 22 Jewish leaders invited to the White House Tuesday, Aug. 3, that if Congress strikes down the Iranian nuclear deal, …”Hizballah rockets will rain down on Tell Aviv” – not on New York. debkafile: Iranian-supplied rockets have repeatedly rained down on Israeli population centers from the 2006 Lebanese war and up to the July 2014 Gaza operation. They hang over Israel today, like yesterday and probably tomorrow, irrespective of whether Congress endorses or throws out Obama’s nuclear deal with Tehran, because they were never part of that deal.

Iran plans missile tests to flaunt defiance of Vienna deal and UNSC resolution
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report August 3, 2015

With US Secretary of State John Kerry due in Qatar Monday, Aug. 3, to ease Gulf security concerns about the Vienna nuclear accord with Iran, the highest authorities in Tehran Sunday, Aug. 2, launched a public campaign in support of impending ballistic missile tests. This would flaunt Tehran’s non-acceptance of their prohibition under the Vienna nuclear accord and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 of July 20. The students of nine Tehran universities and Qom seminaries called on army chief Maj Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi, to immediately stage long-range ballistic missile tests to invalidate the ban..

Iran buys 100 Russian refueling aircraft for its air force to reach any point in the Mid East
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 22, 2015

In defiance of the arms embargo, Iran has placed an order for 100 Russian IL78 MKI tanker aircraft for refueling its air force in mid-flight, debkafile reports exclusively. The transaction runs contrary to the terms of the nuclear accord the six world powers and Iran signed in Vienna earlier this month. These tanker planes can simultaneously refuel 6-8 warplanes. Their acquisition brings Israel, 1.200km away – and the Middle East at large - within easy range of Iranian aerial bombardment. It puts Iran ahead of Israel in mid-air refueling resources.

Netanyahu switches tactics for blocking Iran nuclear deal. Iranian Guards chief: We will never accept it
DEBKAfile Special Report July 21, 2015

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has switched tactics for his struggle against the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. It was unanimously endorsed Monday, July 20, by the UN Security Council and European Union in the first step towards winding down sanctions. debkafile: Instead of an all-out effort to block the deal’s passage through Congress, Netanyahu will propose to Congress new laws to specify the issues on which Iranian violations would make US administration penalties mandatory. In Tehran, the Guards chief has rejected the UN resolution as “crossing Iran’s red lines.”

For a unity government Netanyahu offers Herzog hard-to-refuse deal: Seven cabinet posts in centrist cabinet
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report July 18, 2015

In long conversations taking place in the last few days, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has put before opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog a proposition for a national emergency government, which debkafile’s political sources are calling the “Deal of the Century.” It would toss out the traditional lines polarizing the “rightwing” and “leftwing” political camps and reshuffle them in a different order – that is if the Labor leader says yes. He is offered at least seven top portfolios for his party. Herzog himself would be Acting Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. The new centrist guidelines would leave room for talks with the Palestinians.
