Islamic State forces pushed forward their assault to retake the central Syrian town of Palmyra Monday, Dec. 12, and by evening had entered the big Russian-Syrian T-4 air base outside the town, carrying off substantial quantities of Russian armaments. The heavy fighting between the Egyptian army and Islamic State in northern Sinai evolved by its sixth day into an asymmetrical contest. debkafile: By Monday, July 6, the Egyptians were depending heavily on Apache helicopter air strikes to fight off the Islamist terrorists, who were using guerilla tactics to send foot soldiers to strike by night and mount ambushes by day. The Apaches strike any moving object. ISIS has lost 241 men since July 1, but can keep going in the long term thanks to a constant influx of manpower and war materiel.

The angry masses battling police in Cairo's Tahrir Square and the centers of Alexandria, Ismailia and Port Said for four days are not backed by any serious political entity, including the Muslim Brotherhood, which Tuesday, Nov. 22 threw in their lot with the military council. So will the protesters be satisfied with Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi's promise of a presidential election in mid-2012? Not so far.
